Asante Sana

So this is Day 4 and we just finished another great dinner here in AKAM. But before that we went to finally explore the area aroudn the AKAM compound with Mr. Campanella. A few of us stayed behind at the school, but most of us went and looked at the little shops and street vendors that lined the beautiful coast. The water was a deep dark blue and the waves were less than five meters away from the viewing ledges. The culture here is so relaxed that there were people just sitting on rocks that faced the water, probably having contemplative moments staring out at the ocean. The cold breeze wasa perfect match for the hot air.

At the school we only had a half day visit. Finally finishing the library, and having class with the Class 5 students. After that we had tea and lunch again and then actually got to see some of Africa!

So we got to visit a wood carving tribe that has a small community/business here in Mombasa city. It was amazing seeing how everyone worked together from the tribe. The tribe was called Acaba and they had little stalls set up with wood carvers in each stall. Hamed told us that the Acaba people had been masters in the art of wood working so many of us bought little trinkets here.

The coolest thing about this tribe region was that it was like its own funcitoning city! The wood workers had numbers and everything they made got put into this showroom and tourists and people would get the chance to buy them and a cut of the money for the thing you buy goes to the person that made it :)

See you later!
